Rostock / Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to counter the shortage of civil engineers with several new courses in Rostock and Neubrandenburg.

For this purpose, two courses of study are to begin at the University of Rostock and the University of Neubrandenburg from the autumn semester 2021, as Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) announced to journalists on Wednesday in Schwerin.

After the deletion in 2004, the University of Rostock will once again receive university training for civil engineers.

With the universities of Wismar and Neubrandenburg, it is intended to better interlink the fields of building, landscape and the environment with one another "across locations"

The background to the efforts of the SPD-CDU calition in Schwerin is that, according to estimates by the state engineering council in the northeast, not even half as many civil engineers are being trained as would have to be replaced by retirement.

Two thirds of the approximately 50 civil engineering graduates from the University of Wismar each year also left the country.

In Neubrandenburg there should be an "entry year" with around 20 new students, as Rector Gerd Teschke said.

After that, the students could move to Rostock or Wismar, take their bachelor's degree there and then reorient themselves in several fields.

A master’s degree in Rostrock should be possible from 2024.

From the new apprenticeship to the completion of a doctorate in Rostock - together with environmental engineering - the Ministry of Education expects less emigration.

A total of almost 40 new jobs are to be created at all three locations.
