On Friday, a hundred days have passed since Joe Biden took over as President of the United States.

It was noticed, as usual, that the president gave his first live speech to the congress during the night towards Thursday Swedish time.

As usual, the safety device was large.

But this year it was bigger than ever - with a huge fence surrounding the entire Capitol.

All to avoid a repeat of the storm on January 6.

And the storm in particular was something Biden clearly referred to in his speech.

"I inherited a country in crisis," he said, referring to both the corona pandemic and the attack on the Capitol.

He continued:

- It was the worst attack on our democracy since the civil war.

Criticized for the tributes

Joe Biden also spoke about the corona pandemic and the economy - and tried to show that the country is heading in the right direction.

It stated the goal that 200 million vaccine doses would be distributed during his first hundred days as president was met by a margin.

Biden raised several times during the speech that the pandemic is overcome through cooperation across party lines.

But Republicans still pointed out that Biden largely inherited the vaccine efforts that had already begun during Donald Trump's presidency.

- This administration has inherited a wave that had already turned.

The corona virus is on the run, said Republican Senator Tim Scott.

He continued:

- It is thanks to the Trump administration that our country is flooded with safe and effective vaccines.

Two women behind the president

The speech is described as historic for several reasons.

For the first time, two women sat behind the president during the speech - as Biden also pointed out at the beginning of the speech.

That is when Kamala Harris is the first female vice president and next to her sat the traditional Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

At the same time, the corona pandemic was clearly visible in the House.

The president usually invites guests referred to in the speech - but due to the pandemic, no such guests were invited this year.

Only 200 people were allowed into the room and other members were allowed to watch the speech from home or from their offices.

For that reason, there was also no so-called "designated survivor" who would take over as president if the Capitolum were to be subjected to an attack or equivalent while the entire American power apparatus was gathered.

Footnote: The speech started at 3 Swedish time and is still going on.
