Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg sees growing opportunities for a north German hydrogen technology center.

In the competition of the Federal Ministry of Transport, which has been running since autumn 2020, the competition entries from Hamburg, Bremen and Stade in Lower Saxony have been nominated for the next stage of the selection process, the economic authority announced in Hamburg on Wednesday.

"The three locations are now to set up a joint technology and innovation center for hydrogen applications that will focus on the aerospace, shipping and intralogistics segments."

According to Senator for Economic Affairs Michael Westhagemann, this opens up concrete perspectives in Hamburg's development towards a leading hydrogen location.

Hydrogen, which is obtained with renewable energies, is one of the pillars in the fight against climate change.

It can serve as a basis for fuels and fuels, for example to replace the use of coal, oil and natural gas in industry and transport in order to reduce the emission of climate-damaging CO2.

As part of the federal hydrogen strategy, the Ministry of Transport launched a location competition for a hydrogen technology and innovation center for mobility applications in November.

The ministry will commission a feasibility study on feasibility for up to three winners of the competition.
