Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The Frankfurt zoo director Miguel Casares is leaving the zoo, which he has been running since February 2018, at his own request at the end of June.

The native Spaniard decided to return to Spain for personal reasons, the zoo announced on Wednesday.

"Leaving the Frankfurt Zoo and my team is certainly one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in my life," said a message from Casares, who had already headed the scientific department of the Frankfurt Zoo before taking on the position of director.

In the future he will work for the Bioparc in Valencia.

Ina Hartwig (SPD), Head of the Department of Culture, regretted Casares' imminent departure as a "great loss".

Over the past three years he has "made significant progress in terms of content and structure" at Frankfurt Zoo and, with the Zookunft2030 + concept study, has presented "a convincing plan for the further development of our inner city zoo."

It is thanks to Casares and his team that Frankfurt Zoo is solid and future-oriented even in these times.

Casares was particularly concerned with consolidating the zoo's nature conservation profile and working with the Frankfurt Zoological Society in particular.

This also included the decision to locate the Frankfurt Conservation Center on the zoo grounds.

The Frankfurt Zoo is a magnet for visitors beyond the city limits and is one of the most important leisure facilities in Hesse - even if visitors have had to stay outside for months since the beginning of the corona pandemic or were only able to come in limited numbers during the easing.
