Munich (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters) presented the Bavarian Glacier Report today.

The joint effort of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (BAdW) and the Ministry is intended to show how the future of the Alpine glaciers in the Free State is going.

Accordingly, BAdW President Thomas Höllmann also takes part in the presentation.

The loss of area by glaciers has increased rapidly since the turn of the millennium.

Researchers expect that in a few years only four of the five Bavarian glaciers will be left - and the “eternal” ice of these, too, is severely threatened.

The first thing that should be done is the southern Schneeferner, which, like the northern Schneeferner, is located on the Zugspitzplatt on Germany's highest mountain.

In addition, there is the Höllentalferner, also located in the Wetterstein Mountains, as well as the Blaueis and the Watzmann Glacier in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The latter has also long been considered threatened.
