Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - The nature conservation association Nabu Baden-Württemberg assumes that the work of the past few years in nature and species protection will be continued under the new government.

However, this must then be written into the coalition agreement between the Greens and the CDU and the funds for it anchored, said Nabu boss Johannes Enssle on Wednesday.

«Conservation costs money.

If you save on it, you saw off the branch you are sitting on. "

Enssle also reacted to the latest report on climate development in the state, which the State Agency for the Environment Baden-Württemberg (LUBW) had presented the day before.

The report is scary, said Enssle.

In it, the scientists drew a gloomy picture, citing new climate models. Climate change is progressing much faster in the country than previously assumed. "The summers could be significantly drier and hotter, especially on the Upper Rhine and the Rhine-Neckar region," it says. At the end of the century, in extreme cases, it could become hotter than 30 degrees on an average of 38 instead of the previous 5 days across the country.

This has an impact on energy consumption, agriculture and human health: the need for cooling, for example, could more than double in extreme cases and even more than fivefold by the end of the century, the scientists write.

Because of mild winters, which deprive plants and animals of their hibernation, they could be weakened and, in the worst case, die.

Weeks of heat waves could cause big problems, especially for the elderly and sick, as well as small children.
