While the atmosphere of the blessed month of Ramadan permeates the alleys and neighborhoods of the Old City in the Holy City of Jerusalem, it is completely absent a kilometer from the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, so the occupation forces closed the stands and the Amoud Gate Square, one of the most important and prominent gates of the Old City walls, with iron barriers, in order to prevent the residents Al-Quds people are among the gathering and presence in this place, as they are always accustomed to during the nights of the month of fasting.

Since the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, with the worshipers leaving through the Damascus Gate, following the evening and taraweeh prayers from the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Bab al-Amud area, the opposite Al-Misrara Square, and the Al-Sahira Gate, have witnessed violent confrontations, which resulted in the injury of dozens of Jerusalemites, along with the arrest of others of them.

The occupation forces deliberately disperse Jerusalemites by firing rubber bullets and sound bombs, as well as firing police dogs and pumping waste water hoses, to prevent them from being in the square and stands of Bab al-Amud during Ramadan nights, as they used to every year.

Provocative attacks

Robin Abu Shamsiyeh, a researcher in the affairs of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and a resident of its old town, said in an exclusive interview with “Emirates Today”: “Since the night of the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan, the occupation has imposed provocative practices and attacks, represented in preventing the city's residents from sitting in The squares and terraces of the Amoud Gate, and the square also witnesses night confrontations, during which dozens of Jerusalemites were injured, while the occupation soldiers attacked others, and arrested a number of Jerusalemites.

He added, "Large numbers of police and the occupation forces are deployed in Bab al-Amoud Square, accompanied by police dogs, in addition to the forces removing all the iron barriers they set up to close Bab al-Amoud Square."

The researcher al-Maqdisi explains that “the occupation’s use of police dogs and waste water cannons against Jerusalemites, to prevent their gathering and presence in the square and terraces of the Damascus Gate, is a malicious idea, to achieve the goal of religious indecency for the purity of those who lead the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and leave it after prayer.”

According to Abu Shamsiah, the confrontations in the Bab al-Amud Square in the Holy City of Jerusalem will continue escalating until the end of the blessed month of fasting, and the occupation will continue to erect iron barriers, as part of an Israeli decision that has its own during the month of Ramadan. Al-Amoud, after performing the evening prayers and Tarawih prayers, and they spend family time on Ramadan nights.

In a related context, the specialist in Jerusalem affairs says: “Since UNESCO declared the Jerusalem Wall part of the world heritage, the occupation government took the initiative to apply its full sovereignty over the wall and the Holy City, announcing restoration operations and conducting excavations along the northern side of the wall. , Including the Column Gate, then I set up two checkpoints on the top stands of the Column Gate on both sides, then put up a sign that changed the name of the site, to completely Judaize the place. ”

Abu Shamsiah goes on to say: “The importance of the Al-Amoud Gate as a main gate to the holy city, leading directly to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, made controlling it a priority for the occupation, to control the movement of entry and exit to the Holy City of Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to injure the economy of Jerusalem in the killing, by restricting movement Arrivals to the Islamic Quarter, and the central markets of Jerusalem ».

A mass uprising

The external Bab al-Amud square is one of the largest and most important public squares in the Holy City of Jerusalem, and it has terraces that all lead to the Old City, especially the Islamic quarter in it, while the Bab al-Amud Square from the inside includes a kilometer long road that leads directly to the courtyards of the Temple Mount.

The specialist in Jerusalem affairs and professor of Islamic architecture at Bir Zeit University, the architect Jamal Amr, says to "Emirates Today": “The Column Gate has its religious and historical position for the residents of Jerusalem and all Palestinians, as it is the largest gate, while all its inner alleys lead to the Islamic Quarter. And the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque on the one hand, and the Christian Quarter, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the markets on the other side, so it represents the compass for those coming to Jerusalem, and the most prominent address for the summit of ancient Islamic architecture. ”

Amr points out that the occupation, by force of its weapons, does not recognize the Damascus Gate and the holy sites in the Holy City, as it leads the fiercest confrontations against the lack of respect for religious rituals in the month of mercy and forgiveness.

He points out that the youth of Jerusalem are standing up to the arbitrary and violent practices of the occupation against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, adding: “The reality of what is happening in the Damascus Gate Square portends a gift, and a mass popular uprising from the Jerusalemite population, to protect their sanctities.”

Amr continues his speech: “What the occupation is practicing carries a severe danger, which lies in imposing sovereignty over the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Holy City of Jerusalem. Israel wants Zionism to have the upper hand in the Holy City, and this comes within the framework of an integrated system of plans, in addition to demolishing homes. , The confiscation of lands, the expansion of settlements, the withdrawal of IDs, the erection of checkpoints, and the isolation of neighborhoods and towns in Jerusalem.

Since UNESCO declared the Jerusalem Wall part of the world heritage, the occupation government took the initiative to implement its full sovereignty over the wall and the Holy City, announcing restoration operations and conducting excavations along the northern side of the wall, including the Damascus Gate.

The Damascus Gate has its religious and historical status for the residents of Jerusalem and all Palestinians, as it is the largest gate, while all its inner alleys lead to the Islamic Quarter and Al Aqsa on the one hand, and the Christian Quarter, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the markets on the other hand, so it is a compass for the one coming to Jerusalem, and the most prominent address of the art summit The ancient Islamic architect.
