Berlin (AP) - The Berlin Schaubühne has auctioned several items to support independent theater artists - including props, costumes and a CD collection by actor Lars Eidinger.

The auction brought in more than 43,000 euros, as a theater announcer announced on Tuesday evening.

Eidinger put the CDs on at his “Autistic Disco” party series.

Eidinger's appearances in the theater are legendary.

He has been playing “Hamlet” at the Schaubühne for more than a decade - to this day, performances are usually sold out within minutes.

Because of the pandemic, the Berlin theaters have now - as in other cities - been closed for around six months.

The Schaubühne therefore collects donations for independent theater professionals.

The pandemic had significant economic consequences, especially for artists who were not permanently employed, the Schaubühne had declared.

In addition to the permanent employees, numerous freelance artists are also involved in many of her theater productions.

They would have paid them cancellation fees.

"But after a year of pandemic, the existential needs are getting bigger," said the Schaubühne about its solidarity auction.

At the digital auction, which was supported by the auction house Grisebach, 50 items went under the hammer.

For example, costume pieces from actors like Bruno Ganz (“The Sky over Berlin”), Nina Hoss (“Barbara”) and Ulrich Mühe (“The Lives of Others”) were offered.

Chairs from productions by director Peter Stein were also auctioned.

Also on offer: a glittering Popeye mask and two oversized hamster heads.

A “Hamlet” crown by Eidinger, including a poster, was auctioned for 4200 euros.

The one-off with the highest bid?

Were Eidinger's CDs for 5000 euros.

The collection of donations has now raised a total of around 90,000 euros.

Artists whose productions have been canceled or postponed, for example, should benefit from this.
