Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - The Saarland Ministry of the Interior is giving an extra million euros for on-site inspections in municipalities in the wake of the corona pandemic.

The funding amount to support the municipal security services will thus be increased from 2.3 to 3.3 million, the ministry announced on Wednesday in Saarbrücken.

The money will be used for private security services, additional staff for the district and local police authorities and for vehicle leasing, which is necessary for the increased controls.

It is important to provide the municipalities with funds for increased controls, said Interior Minister Klaus Bouillon (CDU).

"Unfortunately, the most recent incidents in the country have shown that there are still people who have not understood the seriousness of the situation and who, with their irresponsible behavior, put not only their own health at risk, but also the health of others."

On the weekend before last, massive violations of corona rules were registered at celebrations of 400 to 500 people on a square in downtown Saarbrücken.

In addition, a group of police officers from the crowd insulted them and threw bottles at them.

Overall, the Ministry of the Interior has supported Saar municipalities in the corona pandemic with allocations of up to eight million euros.

For example, a funding contingent of a maximum of one million euros is available for equipping municipal schools with CO2 measuring devices.

In addition, the acquisition of mobile air purification devices for classrooms and group rooms that are difficult to ventilate in municipal schools is promoted.
