Bonn (dpa / lnw) - The police in Bonn overpowered an aggressive and presumably mentally ill man who, according to witnesses, is said to have been traveling with a machete.

Passers-by had called the officers on Tuesday evening after they said they had observed a male person with a machete in hand near the mall.

The police said on Wednesday that he came threateningly close to several people.

The emergency services were directed by a witness to the 27-year-old suspect who was known to the police and who wore a face mask with a skull print and did not respond to the officials' speech.

Instead, he had become aggressive, so the police officers used pepper spray.

When that didn't help either and the man approached the officers threateningly, he was overwhelmed after a warning shot was given and despite considerable resistance.

A police officer was reportedly slightly injured.

When the 27-year-old was checked, there were indications of a possible psychological impairment.

He was admitted to a clinic.

The machete observed by the witnesses was initially not found even when searching in the vicinity.
