Finsterwalde (dpa / bb) - In the process of the violent death of a 61-year-old from Finsterwalde (Elbe-Elster), the verdict is to be pronounced before the Cottbus regional court from today.

The 66-year-old German is charged with murder.

He is said to have attacked his wife in September last year with a kitchen knife and a meat tenderizer "suddenly and deliberately taking advantage of the element of surprise" in the shared apartment while she was sleeping.

The woman was found dead in the apartment in an apartment building.

In their pleadings, the public prosecutor's office and the accessory prosecution demanded a murder conviction and a life sentence for the defendant.

The defense pleaded for manslaughter.

She did not demand a specific sentence.

According to the regional court, the defendant has not yet commented on the crime.

During the four days of the trial, the court had heard a number of witnesses, including several police officers and relatives of those killed.

In addition, forensic doctors were heard on the cause of death and the question of culpability.
