The B.1.617 variant, more commonly known as the Indian variant, has been detected in more than 1,200 genome sequences in "at least 17 countries," the WHO said.

This more contagious variant is said to be particularly present in the United Kingdom, the United States and Singapore, as well as in several European countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, Greece and Italy.

In India, B.1.617 has indeed a higher growth rate than the others.

According to the WHO, this variant could be more contagious than its strain, but it remains for the moment in the “variant of interest” category and not “of concern”.

India exceeded the threshold of 200,000 deaths on April 28 and again experienced Tuesday, an impressive number of infections in one day: 350,000.
