Parchim (dpa / mv) - The Archdiocese of Hamburg closes one of its educational centers in Mecklenburg for cost reasons.

As the diocese announced on Wednesday, the Edith Stein House, which was newly built in Parchim in 1995, will completely cease its educational work from July.

A sharp decline in occupancy since 2017 has meant that the Catholic Archdiocese last had to pay EUR 300,000 as a grant in the year.

The legal requirements in the corona pandemic would have exacerbated the situation of the house.

Seven employees are affected.

It is currently being checked whether the educational center can also be used by the St. Nikolaus senior citizens' home built next to it, which Caritas operates.

In Mecklenburg, the archbishopric has similar institutions in Teterow and Neu Sammit (Rostock district) and in Dreilützow near Ludwigslust.

The Catholics in Mecklenburg form the archbishopric together with Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.

The Catholics in Western Pomerania belong to the diocese of Berlin.
