Leipzig (dpa / sn) - Because of a warning strike, the tapes at the Leipzig BMW plant have been idle since Tuesday morning - for 24 hours.

More than 5000 employees of the plant want to emphasize their demands for equal pay in East and West.

"A warning strike over 24 hours has a completely different dimension than other strikes," says Bernd Kruppa, first authorized representative of IG Metall Leipzig.

The plan is to steadily intensify the strikes until results are on the negotiating table.

In Berlin and Brandenburg, too, IG Metall regularly calls for warning strikes in the course of the current negotiations.

According to the union, over 31,000 workers have been involved in strikes on a total of six warning strike days in Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony.

As part of ongoing collective bargaining, IG Metall is demanding four percent more wages or job security.

In addition, it is about future collective agreements to shape the transformation, and collectively improved takeover rules for trained people.

To this end, IG Metall in the Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony district is demanding a collective adjustment allowance for the roughly 290,000 employees (110,000 in Berlin-Brandenburg and 180,000 in Saxony) because of the unequal pay of employees in East and West.
