Hanover (dpa / lni) - The validity of the candidate list of the Lower Saxony AfD for the federal election has not yet been clarified with the state election management against the background of possible formal errors.

AfD General Secretary Nicolas Lehrke announced this to the dpa in Hanover on Tuesday.

"The regional election management had various inquiries about this, but unfortunately we have not yet received a specific statement about the eligibility of the list," said Lehrke.

The crux of the matter is that the invitation to the assembly meeting in December did not reach 40 of the around 2500 AfD members in the country.

As early as February, when the validity of the list was in doubt, a showdown of strength between the two camps in the AfD was suspected behind the scenes. Only at the state party conference in August Jens Kestner wrested the state chairmanship of the previous, moderate camp from Dana Guth from the party's right-wing camp. At the assembly meeting, the situation was reversed: the candidates for the state board, especially Kestner and the former chairman Armin-Paul Hampel, submitted their applications. Ex-Bundeswehr General Joachim Wundrak was elected as the top candidate of the Lower Saxony AfD for the federal election.

According to information from the political journal “Rundblick”, opponents may now plan to overthrow the state executive.

Accordingly, the board wants to convene a special party conference, which is to take place on May 15th in Braunschweig.

Apparently a trial of strength is imminent.

Opponents of the state executive have already submitted requests to vote against individual members of the executive committee.

It is possible that a vote against Kestner himself will be submitted.

According to the “Rundblick” research, the other side must also expect headwinds at this special party conference.

In the AfD, thoughts were circulating that the party congress could request a renewed invitation from the state executive to a constellation meeting for the federal election.

Mistrust is spreading, some AfD members are working with delaying tactics.

As Gehrke told the dpa, the AfD is concerned about the deadline for the last possible submission of the list of candidates in July, “especially since the search for and renting a suitable space has taken months in the past”.
