The Rwandan foreign minister admits that past accusations by Rwandan officials, starting with President Paul Kagame, that France was not only an accomplice, but also guilty of participating in the genocide, are no longer relevant.

He also explains that Rwanda is not seeking to take legal action against former French officials.

Vincent Biruta, however, hopes that those who are suspected of having participated in the genocide and are in France, including the widow of former President Juvenal Habyrimana, will be tried.

The Rwandan foreign minister hails the "courage" of French President Emmanuel Macron, while stressing that it is up to him, and not Rwanda, to decide whether to issue a formal apology.

He explains that the date of a visit by the French president to Rwanda has not yet been decided.

Vincent Biruta rejects the criticisms leveled by several Western countries, notably Belgium, on the trial of Paul Rusesabagina, the former owner of the Mille Collines hotel, famous for having saved many lives during the genocide and now an enemy of the regime.

According to the minister, the trial is fair and no one has to dictate to Rwanda his behavior.
