Hamburg (dpa) - A new Hamburg association with Kirsten Boie and Rolf Zuckowski as ambassadors is committed to an annual European Children's Capital.

"If we want Europe to have a future, we have to give the children a voice," says the preamble of the association, which was presented on Tuesday.

The members want to achieve that - similar to the European Capital of Culture - each year a European city or region is selected from the applicants and then becomes the host for Europe's youth.

The idea is to put the “European Idea” at the center of children and young people.

The Hamburg children's book author Kirsten Boie supports the project: «A wonderful idea! With an abundance of projects, the European Children's Capital could ensure that even children feel like Europeans. " Songwriter Rolf Zuckowski is also there: "House Europe can only be a good house if it is also a home for the children that offers them security, opportunities and prospects."

Now the association is looking for colleagues in all European countries.

"Because the Children's Capital shouldn't be a Hamburg or German project, but a pan-European one," says Jan Haarmeyer, the idea generator and chairman of the association.

The more people, institutions and cities from all over Europe participated, the easier it would be for the EU bodies to be convinced of the idea.

The association also takes part in the European week (May 1-9) in Hamburg.
