Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - Hundreds of citizens in Saarland have already donated glasses for an aid project.

State Secretary of Justice Roland Theis, together with the head of the Saarbrücken correctional facility, Pascal Jenal, handed over a first delivery of more than 600 reprocessed glasses and a further 700 frames to the “Glasses without borders” project, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Since the first collection box was set up at the Saarland Higher Regional Court in December 2020, citizens at all judicial locations in Saarland have been able to donate their old, no longer needed glasses.

The so far more than 1500 glasses collected nationwide would continue to be cleaned, processed and measured in the occupational therapy of the Saarbrücken prison, it said.

“The broad willingness to support the project far exceeded all of our expectations and we were very pleased,” explained Theis.

«While it goes without saying that we use visual aids when necessary, this is not always the case in poorer regions of the world.

There glasses are sometimes priceless luxury items. "
