Darmstadt / Oberursel (dpa / lhe) - The police have arrested a suspected con artist who is said to have deprived pensioners of their savings nationwide.

The 22-year-old man from Oberursel (Hochtaunuskreis) came into custody, as the public prosecutor in Darmstadt announced on Tuesday.

According to the investigation, he is said to have posed as a police officer since last autumn in order to get his victims to give him valuables and bank details.

Among other things, he is suspected of cheating on two 76 and 87-year-old women from Herbstein (Vogelsbergkreis) in October.

In the case of further frauds, he is said to have at least "actively participated".

The investigators did not give any further details.
