Düsseldorf (dpa) - The North Rhine-Westphalian police rely on so-called virtual reality glasses to prevent traffic accidents.

The police bought a total of ten VR glasses worth 700 euros each for ten police authorities and produced films that they now want to show to road users aged 12 and over.

So far, the project has cost less than 17,000 euros, says a person in charge in Düsseldorf.

With the VR glasses you open a new chapter in the accident prevention and raise the previous efforts to a "new level", said NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU).

With the help of the glasses, in which 360-degree films are shown, the participants should put themselves into the different perspectives of road users.

The pilot project is expected to run until the end of the year and, if successful, will be expanded nationwide.
