Rostock (dpa / mv) - A test of the new shore power system is currently underway in Warnemünde.

For this purpose, the cruise ship “Aidasol” has docked at the passenger quay.

For Aida Cruises, the facility in Warnemünde is a step on the way to emission-neutral cruises, said Aida boss Felix Eichhorn.

This is part of the so-called “Green Cruising Strategy”, under which the company has been investing in a sustainable cruise market for many years.

According to the plan, the "Aidasol" will remain at the passenger quay until next Saturday.

According to the port, the shore power system, which was completed in summer 2020, is currently the largest in Europe. It can deliver up to 20 megavolt amperes of electrical energy. This will enable two cruise ships to be supplied with electricity at the same time at berths P7 and P8. The investment costs are around 19 million euros and are therefore almost 2 million euros cheaper than forecast in the planning phase, said Rostock's Finance Senator Chris Müller-von Wrycz Rekowski (SPD). The state is funding 90 percent of the investment from funds from the joint task “Improvement of the regional economic structure”.

With the completion of the shore power system and the new cruise terminal Warnemünde Cruise Center 8, the port of Rostock is investing in future-proof, safe and sustainable cruise shipping, emphasized port managing director Jens Scharner.

The shore power system will make a measurable contribution to reducing emissions in Warnemünde and to climate protection.
