Hanover (dpa) - In 2020, the domestic production of natural gas fell by almost 16 percent year-on-year from 6.1 to 5.2 billion cubic meters.

It still covers a good five percent of German consumption.

In addition to the natural decline in production, the main cause of the development were maintenance work lasting several months on Germany's largest natural gas processing plant, the Federal Association for Natural Gas, Petroleum and Geoenergy (BVEG) announced on Tuesday.

Almost 97 percent of the natural gas is obtained in the state of Lower Saxony.

Domestic production of crude oil in 2020 remained at the previous year's level, which was 1.9 million tons as in 2019. In addition to renewable energies, both raw materials would be needed for decades to meet the high energy demand, said BVEG managing director Ludwig Möhring. Domestic subsidies reduce the need for imports, thus avoiding transport and CO2 emissions. Natural gas also plays a decisive role in the production of climate-neutral hydrogen.

According to the Working Group on Energy Balances, renewables were able to increase their share in the energy mix in 2020.

Biomass, solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy and the biogenic share of waste covered a total of 16.6 percent (2019: 14.9) of total domestic energy consumption.

The most important energy source remained mineral oil with a share of 33.7 percent (35.2), followed by natural gas with 26.6 percent (25.1).

Hard coal accounted for 7.7 percent (8.5) and lignite 8.1 percent (9.1).

The contribution of nuclear energy was 6.0 percent (6.4).
