Munich (dpa / lby) - The cancellation of the Munich Oktoberfest this year is becoming more and more likely.

Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has again expressed himself very skeptically that the Oktoberfest can take place.

"Hope gets weaker from week to week, if you are honest," said the town hall chief of the "Bild" newspaper.

"The probability is high that such festivals cannot be justified for infectious reasons."

In a message on Tuesday, Reiter made it clear again that the decision had not yet been made.

Reiter said he would speak to Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) about it shortly. He thinks it makes sense to decide this uniformly with a view to all major folk festivals in the Free State. Söder also took this view after a cabinet meeting. The Oktoberfest is not just a Bavarian festival, but a global event. He thinks the mayor's fears are justified, said Söder.

Oktoberfest was canceled in 2020 due to the corona pandemic.

Actually, last year he had firmly assumed that there will be Oktoberfest in 2021, Reiter told the “Bild” newspaper.

But: "As of today, it could not take place under the applicable regulations."

It cannot be said that the pandemic is in any way subsiding.

"And that's why it's currently difficult to imagine that the world's largest festival can be held."

A few weeks ago, Reiter had been cautious about the chances of an Oktoberfest this year.

Söder had also shown himself skeptical.
