Attacks on local politicians seem to have increased during the corona pandemic.

This is shown by a survey published on Tuesday by the magazine “Kommunal” on behalf of the ARD political magazine “report Munich”.

A total of 72 percent of the mayors in Germany have been insulted, insulted, threatened or even physically attacked.

In a comparable survey last year, the value was still 64 percent.

Not only the mayors are the target of attacks.

In 79 percent of the communities there were insults and attacks against community representatives or employees.

A year ago, 70 percent of the municipalities reported such incidents.

According to the survey, 20 percent of community officials or employees were even physically assaulted, spat at or beaten.

Among the mayors, eleven percent experienced this themselves - two percent more than last year.

More than a third of those surveyed (37 percent) see an increase in attacks and insults due to the corona pandemic.

Just over half (53 percent) say the number of attacks remained roughly the same.

In almost half of the cities and municipalities (46 percent) there were reportedly problems in enforcing the mask requirement, in 34 percent in enforcing the minimum distance rules. There is a gap between east and west. While 62 percent of the mayors surveyed from East Germany report problems with enforcing the mask requirement, in the west it is 42 percent. 1611 elected officials were interviewed.
