Grünheide (dpa) - The time of the decision on the approval of the factory of the US electric car manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide near Berlin is still open - and with it the exact start of production.

“The first car will roll off the assembly line when the final approval is available and the plant has been built,” said Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Jörg Steinbach (SPD), on request on Tuesday.

"When the approval process will be completed, no specific date can be given here today - because the principle of quality over speed clearly applies here."

Tesla had applied for the plant to start production in July 2021.

The environmental approval from the state of Brandenburg is pending.

A public hearing of critics last autumn and the processing of the objections caused a delay in the construction of the building.

From industry circles it was said until a few weeks ago that the start of production was announced for this July.

Steinbach had considered a delay of around three months for the start to be conceivable in the event that the factory's application documents were to be redesigned.

Tesla's annual report for the first quarter now states that the project is on track to begin production and deliveries in late 2021.

Tesla is currently building at its own risk - through several early approvals.
