Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) is relying on close coordination with the housing industry after the failure of the rent cover law.

"We must be concerned together to avoid social upheaval and to take away people's worries about rents that are no longer affordable," said Müller on Tuesday.

In the afternoon, representatives from the Senate and the real estate industry met for the first time at a round table after the Federal Constitutional Court had declared the rent cap null and void in mid-April.

The Berlin tenants' association and the DGB Berlin-Brandenburg were also invited.

"I am confident that we will find solutions at the round table in terms of social cohesion in the city and especially in the interests of the tenants," said Müller, who suggested the meeting.

New residential construction and the purchase of apartments are the right way out of the tense market situation.

The Senate will also act on the federal level to further develop the rental legislation.

All those involved in the round table agreed that tenants should not lose their apartments due to additional claims, the Senate Chancellery announced after the meeting.

The Berlin and Brandenburg Construction Association, which represents the interests of the medium-sized construction industry, criticized the meeting.

"We are surprised that the governing mayor has invited to a round table to improve the housing situation without those who in the end have to build the urgently needed affordable apartments in the city," said Managing Director Manja Schreiner on Tuesday.
