Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - In the Corona year 2020, households in Saarland produced more garbage than in previous years.

According to preliminary figures from the Saar waste disposal association, 141,858 tonnes of household waste (gray bin) were incurred last year, the state government said in response to a request from the state parliament member Astrid Schramm (left).

This is 4,362 tons (or a good three percent) more than in 2019 - and a total of about as many tons of waste as last in 2015.

The increase is also a consequence of the corona pandemic: people stayed at home more and caused more waste there.

According to the Saar state government, there is also the fact that “all waste in quarantine households must be disposed of in the residual waste bin”.

Even worn disposable masks belong in the residual waste.

Obviously, there was also a lot of clearing out and tinkering in 2020: The volume of bulky waste increased by 793 tonnes to 51,937 tons compared to the previous year.

Some recycling centers also reported significant increases in construction waste such as mixed construction rubble and waste wood.

This is explained by the fact that more renovation work was being done at home during the corona-related restrictions, it said.

The increase in the volume of waste has no impact on disposal.

"There is no garbage problem," said the government.

It is assumed that the waste figures would normalize again after the pandemic.
