Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony is investing more money in social housing.

The cabinet decided on corresponding funding guidelines on Tuesday in Dresden.

In 2021 and 2022, 74.3 million euros are to be available for the construction and renovation of such apartments.

Apartment owners who cannot finance modernizations should receive funding and continue to guarantee low rents.

"This is an important step so that more people can find affordable apartments in our big cities as well as in rural areas," said the SPD politician Albrecht Pallas. For the first time, Dresden and Leipzig were given the option of binding occupancy for 20 years. In the future, significantly more households would also be given the opportunity to allocate living space with social ties. Pallas was confident that the coalition will soon find a solution for the rent brake in the big cities.

The Greens also insist on the introduction of a rent brake in Leipzig and Dresden.

“From our point of view, all the requirements have been met.

The republic-wide discussion about the failed rent cap in Berlin shows how politically explosive the rent explosion issue is in large cities, ”said Thomas Löser, member of the state parliament.

The rent brake caps the rent increase when re-letting existing apartments to a maximum of ten percent.

The regional development minister responsible for housing, Thomas Schmidt (CDU), announced that a decision on the rent brake would be made by the end of May.

Such a regulation must then also "sit".

You don't want to cause chaos and you need a decision that will stand up to the courts.

The left, however, considers the planned regulations to be inadequate.

"We want even more social housing to be created in Saxony, especially in the metropolitan areas of Dresden and Leipzig - but in perspective everywhere where the adequate supply of rented apartments at reasonable conditions is at risk," said MP Juliane Nagel.

To do this, the Free State must exhaust the federal funds, co-finance them and turn further adjusting screws.
