Green, lots of green.

During the last municipal campaign, nature in the city had emerged as one of the major themes of the election in Rennes, the candidates competing for ideas to green the city.

There is of course the context of ecological emergency which requires reinventing urban spaces.

There is also the opinion of Rennais and Rennais who, surveyed as part of the Rennes 2030 consultation, felt that the city center was too gray and mineral.

To remedy this, the city unveiled this Monday evening to the city council a symbolic operation with the greening project of the town hall square.

Several meetings with architects from the Buildings of France convinced elected officials that it was possible to plant trees in the central square of the Breton capital.

The revegetation work will begin in November and end in January 2022. By this date, eighteen trees will have been planted on both sides of the town hall and the opera house at a cost of 204,000 euros.

The choice of species to be planted will be debated

"We will plant trees high enough to be able to enjoy them from the start but they will not exceed 10 to 15 meters to preserve the view," said Didier Chapellon, the elected representative in charge of biodiversity at the city of Rennes.

The choice of tree species that will be planted in this “very constrained” environment is not yet known.

This will be the subject of discussions in the coming weeks with partner associations as part of a tree charter in the city which must be implemented soon.

To accompany the trees in their new urban habitat, perennial plants will also be planted in order to offer "a more vegetal aspect in place of the town hall even in winter", underlines the elected official.
