Hanover (dpa / lni) - Despite the corona pandemic, the state of Lower Saxony wants to celebrate its 75th birthday in a big way.

This is a "thought that takes getting used to," but "we think there is something to celebrate," said Prime Minister Stephan Weil on Tuesday.

The past 75 years have been a “happy phase” for the country - “perhaps the happiest phase our region has ever had”.

The state of Lower Saxony was founded by ordinance of the British military administration on November 1, 1946 from the states of Hanover, Oldenburg, Braunschweig and Schaumburg-Lippe.

However, in view of the pandemic, the celebration is under a special star, probably the biggest crisis to date, said Weil. There is a major reservation in the planning: "We will not take any risks." A ceremony is planned for November 1st in Hanover - with guests from Germany and abroad. At the same time there should be an international symposium of the partner regions and an international school workshop. Depending on the corona crisis, Lower Saxony's day should also be celebrated from October 8 to 10 in the state capital.

In addition, the project “digital human chain” is to be started with referee Bibiana Steinhaus-Webb from Hanover and Keno Veith, who became an internet star as the low-key “Schwatter Ostfrees Jung”.

People should be encouraged to take photos of themselves, which, according to Weil, should then be cut together to form the longest digital human chain.
