New Delhi (dpa) - India recorded the highest number of new corona infections in the world for the sixth day in a row.

According to the Ministry of Health, 323,144 new cases and 2,771 deaths with a confirmed infection have been reported.

The rapid increase in the number of patients caused overloads in the health system.

The lack of medical oxygen and hospital beds reportedly resulted in deaths.

In the worst corona wave to date in the South Asian country, over 300,000 new cases have been registered every day since Thursday.

This exceeded the previous daily record of 300,310 cases in the USA, which was set at the beginning of January.

India also reported the highest daily number of deaths last week.

In the second most populous country in the world with around 1.3 billion inhabitants, the total number of infections rose to around 17.6 million, and almost 198,000 people have died so far.

The unreported numbers are likely to be significantly higher.

Doctors in the worst-hit city of New Delhi described how critically ill patients died on the street from a lack of hospital beds or a lack of medical oxygen.

The lack of oxygen has been blamed for 14 other deaths in four states, according to media reports.

Several countries including Germany have pledged their support to India.

A delivery of medical supplies from Great Britain arrived on Tuesday morning, the Indian Foreign Ministry announced.

These included 100 ventilators and 95 oxygen concentrators.

These are widely used devices in which the oxygen is enriched from the ambient air.

A number of countries such as Australia have suspended flights from India.

Germany and other countries have severely restricted entry from the South Asian country because of the virus variant there.
