High tension day in Chad.

A week after the death of President Idriss Deby, a few dozen people gathered on Tuesday, April 27, in the capital N'Djamena, sometimes burning a few tires, before being quickly dispersed from the beginning of the morning.

They responded to calls from several opposition parties and civil society organizations against the seizure of power by a Transitional Military Council (CMT) headed by the son of the late Marshal Déby, Mahamat Idriss Déby, and composed of 14 other generals loyal to his father.

The authorities had banned these gatherings on Monday.

A woman was killed in N'Djamena by demonstrators, the public prosecutor told AFP, as police disperse opposition rallies against the junta.

"The demonstrators attacked a bus in the Dembé district, some passengers fled but a lady remained and was killed by the demonstrators," N'Djamena prosecutor Youssouf Tom told AFP by telephone.

In southern Chad, a 21-year-old man was also killed in a protest, the local prosecutor told AFP.

"There was one death in Moundou, who died this morning in the demonstrations, we do not yet have the exact circumstances of the death, he is a young man of 21," Ali Kolla Brahim told AFP by telephone. , the public prosecutor of Chad's second city, Moundou, some 400 km south of N'Djamena.

Clashes in N'Djaména, under high tension

This Tuesday "is the first test in this showdown between civil society, the opposition movements and the new strong man of the regime, Mahamat Idriss Déby", explains the special envoy of France 24 in N'Djaména, Cyril Payen .

"Some unions, opposition movements and civil society started to gather as early as 5 am, with scuffles already underway."

The Chadian police on Tuesday dispersed with tear gas some sporadic demonstrations of dozens of people.

In the districts of the 7th and 9th arrondissements of N'Djamena, in the east of the capital, a few dozen demonstrators were burning tires on secondary roads.

The forces of order, deployed massively in N'Djamena, dispersed them at the slightest beginning of a gathering.

"We are fed up, fed up, fed up with the monarchical dynasty in Chad," Sarah told AFP.

Behind her, young people came running and shouted "police, police".

As a security forces pick-up approached, around 20 demonstrators ran off.

In the early morning black traces of burnt tires littered the tar while others still burned, detonations of tear gas grenades echoed here and there.

No gatherings

These gatherings were banned Monday by the Transitional Military Council (CMT) headed by the son of the deceased, General Mahamat Idriss Déby, and 14 other generals, because "likely to cause disturbances to public order".

"All marches or demonstrations, whatever their denominations, not having had a prior agreement and likely to cause disturbances to public order, are strictly prohibited throughout the national territory", according to the signed decree by Souleyman Abakar Adoum, of the Transitional Military Council (CMT).

Several political parties and civil society associations called for demonstrations on Tuesday against the CMT, led by Mahamat Idriss Déby, son of former president Idriss Déby, who arrogates to himself all the powers. The Chadian human rights convention on Monday asked its activists "in love with peace and justice to come out en masse" against the CMT, "an illegal and illegitimate body dubbed by France which thinks of imposing on the Chadians a new military dictatorship" .

Mahamat Idriss Déby has promised "free and democratic elections" in 18 months.

General of the army, 37 years old, he is also "the supreme chief of the armed forces" and presides over the CMT, "the council of ministers, the councils and higher committees of national defense", according to this transitional charter.

As soon as the CMT took power, the opposition and civil society called for "a transition led by civilians".
