Berlin / Munich (dpa) - There was a hacker attack on the CSU campaign for nationwide online memberships.

Thousands of fake registrations were generated, said CSU General Secretary Markus Blume on Tuesday.

The party's IT department was quickly able to identify these registrations.

Blume also reported a wave of entry that he had not seen in the past 10 years: The party had more than 3,000 new members within a week.

That is "a really very strong sign" and also shows what binding force the CSU has for the Union across Germany.

Shortly after the resignation of party leader Markus Söder and the proclamation of CDU leader Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor, the CSU had seen a surge in inquiries about online memberships. Since September 2020, the party has been offering online memberships for which you do not have to be a local member. CSU online members do not have voting rights within the party, but can digitally contribute to the work of the party.

Blume attacked the Greens in particular.

Her chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock was "also an abstainer," he criticized again with a view to her voting behavior in the Bundestag.

A few days ago he had told Baerbock in a tweet that he had abstained from the Civil Protection Act, the BND Act and votes on several Bundeswehr missions abroad.

Someone who promises to want to become Chancellor with a lot of attitude and who shines with abstention when setting the course has to answer a few questions, said Blume.

The Greens were on the front pages and tinkered through the talk shows - "but there wasn't much in the way of programming," said Blume.

In fields that are allegedly fields of the Greens, such as climate protection, the Union will show that it can be done better.

And in the areas of competence of the CDU / CSU such as economic and tax policy, people would see that in the end it was a matter of choosing a direction where different ideas were clearly on the table.
