Limburg (dpa) - The chairman of the German Bishops' Conference and Limburg Bishop, Georg Bätzing, has called on politics and society to take a decisive response to the social and economic effects of the corona pandemic.

"Corona will probably realign all of our lives - long-term and globally," writes the bishop.

A simple return to the previous normal state will not be possible, according to a message from the Diocese of Limburg on Tuesday.

From Bätzing's point of view, the situation of disadvantaged people is worsening in the pandemic. Seniors and sick people, women and men affected by poverty, refugees and socially disadvantaged families are particularly affected. “The way into the future also offers opportunities to shape our coexistence better,” it continues. Therefore, politics and society are particularly challenged by additional efforts to maintain social justice, equal opportunities and social coexistence.

In the fight against loneliness, too, social institutions and services as well as pastoral offers must be more strongly promoted and further developed together with the federal, state and local governments.

Among other things, in his social word, the bishop calls for help for low-wage earners, self-employed individuals and small businesses.

Further financial support is also needed for sectors particularly affected.

At the same time, Bätzing advocates not only symbolically appreciating people in “systemically relevant professions”, for example in nursing or care for the elderly, but also fundamentally and sustainably improving the framework conditions in the respective work areas.
