Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Last year, asparagus was the most widely grown vegetable in Hesse - at least with regard to the area share.

As can be seen from figures from the State Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, it grew to a good 23 percent of the Hessian vegetable cultivation area.

In second place, according to Tuesday's statisticians, are onions with an area share of 18 percent, followed by French beans (7.4 percent) and white cabbage (7.3 percent).

In terms of harvest volumes, however, the picture is different: at 8,500 tons, asparagus is far behind white cabbage (38,800 tons) and carrots (21,900 tons).

This is due to the fact that with the noble pole vegetables the yield per hectare is significantly lower.

The State Office put the total area under cultivation for outdoor vegetables at 7209 hectares nationwide.

The asparagus season started this year on April 8th and traditionally lasts until Midsummer Day on June 24th.

According to earlier information from the Hessian Farmers' Association, there are 120 asparagus farmers across the country whose cultivation area is larger than half a hectare.
