Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The Alster fountain is bubbling again: In glorious sunshine, Environment Senator Jens Kerstan (Greens) as well as Nathalie Leroy, Managing Director Hamburg Wasser, and District Office Manager Falko Droßmann gave the starting shot for the Hamburg landmark on Tuesday.

"With the Alster fountain, we are once again sending spring greetings to everyone in Hamburg this year," said Leroy.

"We hope that with our commitment we will contribute to the fact that this Hamburg symbol for joie de vivre and now also normality can give the people of our city some courage, confidence and hope in these difficult times."

The Alster fountain has been part of the Hamburg cityscape since 1987.

Every day from 9 a.m. to midnight, it will again be the eye-catcher on the Inner Alster.

The pumps convey around 180 cubic meters of water per hour in order to shoot the water column, which is up to 60 meters high, into the sky.

New this year is a more effective motor for the pumps, so that they work more than 20 percent more energy-efficiently.
