Wangen (dpa / lsw) - With the prospect of a large amount of gold, fraudsters cheated a 58-year-old from Wangen for tens of thousands of euros.

The man had been led to believe on the phone that the gold was available in an African port and could be disembarked against a deposit, a police spokeswoman reported on Tuesday.

After the hitherto unknown perpetrators had sent the 58-year-old alleged documents from a lawyer, which he considered genuine, the man first transferred a deposit of several thousand euros.

In the following weeks he transferred more money, which he should get back with a profit on delivery of the gold.

He never got the promised gold.

The man has reportedly lost a sum of money in the high five-digit range through the fraudsters.
