Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - Ten state sports federations are taking part in a study on sexual harassment and violence in sport. In the nationwide study “SafeSport”, scientists from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the Ulm University Clinic want to find out to what extent amateur athletes aged 16 and over were confronted with sexual violence. This was announced by the State Sports Association of Hesse on Monday. Five years ago, the “Safe Sport” study in 2016 examined the topic of sexual violence in competitive sport. Club-organized mass sports are now being looked at with the new research project, it said. The “Safe Sport” study was the first to collect data from sport on this topic. The central result of the online survey of around 1,800 squad athletes wasthat sexual violence also occurs in competitive sport - and just as often as in the general population.

"In order to be able to scientifically assess the situation in amateur and popular sport, it is now important to take a look at club sport via the online survey of athletes aged 16 and over," the message said.

For this purpose, those responsible such as department heads or trainers should distribute the digital questionnaires among as many athletes as possible.

The anonymized research results should help to further develop future prevention work in club sports.
