Görwihl (dpa / lsw) - The Baden-Württemberg swallow expert Rudi Apel has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment to animal welfare.

"Rudi Apel is a doer in nature conservation," said André Baumann, State Secretary in the State Ministry, on Monday.

"Everyone can make our world a little better, is his message."

Apel, who lives in Görwihl near the Swiss border, has been campaigning for the nationwide Nabu campaign "Swallow-friendly house" for years.

The goal: to make people aware of what they can do for swallows.

For example, anyone who lets swallows nest on their house can apply for a corresponding badge.

The swallow has to struggle with many difficulties these days, Apel said before the dpa award ceremony.

Modern facade coatings ensured that the nests did not hold up well.

Because many areas are sealed, there is often a lack of clay for building nests.

And some homeowners were bothered by the droppings under the nests and removed them without permission.

If you want to do something for the agile migratory bird, you can, according to Nabu, install nest building aids or artificial nests.
