Berlin (dpa / bb) - Because he is said to have attacked and robbed a senior citizen, a 56-year-old must answer before the Berlin district court.

The defendant is said to have followed the then 80-year-old woman into the apartment, hit her in the head and snatched her handbag.

The man rejected the allegations at the start of the trial on Monday.

The 56-year-old said he was not in the senior citizen's apartment.

It was a misunderstanding.

According to the investigation, the woman came from shopping on November 28, 2020 when the stranger followed her into the elevator of her apartment building in Berlin-Reinickendorf. When she tried to unlock the door of her apartment, he put one foot in the door and forcibly gained entry. "In the apartment he hit the woman in the head," it says in the indictment. The perpetrator then sat on the couch in the living room to smoke a cigarette. He also locked the door to the room.

The now 81-year-old was the first to say that the stranger kept pulling on her bag.

He slammed his fist and also put it in a headlock.

"When he locked the door, I thought, now it's over with me."

However, she managed to call the police.

According to her impression, the man was "not very clear".

He fled with a case containing bonus cards.

Shortly thereafter, officials caught the alleged perpetrator on their doorstep.

The trial will continue on April 29th.
