Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The gardeners cut perennials and shrubs, signs are attached and the barriers in and in front of the zoo are being rebuilt: the gates of Hagenbeck's zoo have been closed for more than 170 days.

But on Wednesday the zoo is allowed to reopen for visitors under the applicable distance and hygiene rules.

"We are relieved that we can finally get started again," said press spokeswoman Sabina Bernhardt on Monday.

The animals were also looking forward to the visitors.

"The goats were only complaining because there were no people there."

The opening was made possible because Hamburg took over the so-called corona emergency brake of the federal government.

After that, the outdoor areas of zoos and botanical gardens are allowed to reopen.

However, a fixed appointment must be booked online before the visit and a negative corona test certificate must be presented.

The zoo announced that it is not possible to buy tickets on site.

A total of 4,000 visitors are allowed to visit the zoo per day.
