The German Green Party recently received a donation that was as high as it was paradoxical.

Moritz Schmidt, a 39-year-old digital specialist, offered one million euros in bitcoin to German environmentalists ... to ban bitcoin.

Moritz Schmidt, however, owes his fortune to Bitcoin.

He explained that he had acquired “a few thousand euros” of this virtual currency in 2011.

An ecological awareness

The gradual resale of currencies then allowed him to pocket around two million euros over the years.

“I made huge profits from the Bitcoin bubble,” commented the multimillionaire.

“It has been like a roller coaster, and these gains are undeserved wealth.

The developer's approach is explained by its environmental awareness, after having realized in 2017 the strong ecological impact of cryptocurrency mining.

“The Bitcoin system is inherently hyper-energy intensive,” he said, explaining that he preferred to give money to a political party rather than an association in order to have a more significant effect.

Elections in September 

“I was more or less waiting for the right moment to make a large donation,” said Moritz Schmidt.

The million euros he paid to the Greens is one of the highest funding ever received by a German party.

The country's political groups usually campaign thanks to state aid and contributions paid by their members.

The German Green Party and its candidate Annalena Baerbock currently feature prominently in the polls.

National elections for Angela Merkel's successor will take place on September 26.
