Offenbach (dpa) - In the past few years, April has brought plenty of spring warmth in Germany - that's different this year.

Even if the preliminary balance of the German Weather Service (DWD) is due at the end of the week, it is already becoming apparent that the month is likely to be below the temperature norm of the long-term average and could turn out to be the coldest April month in the last 30 years.

It was completely different in the past few years.

With an average temperature of 12.3 degrees, April 2018 was the warmest since weather records began in Germany.

The last two years were also well above the long-term average with values of 9.6 and 10.2 degrees.

For the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990, however, the average value is 7.4 degrees, in the warmer comparison period 1991 to 2020 it is nine degrees.

"This is of course not a sign to question global warming," emphasized DWD spokesman Andreas Friedrich.

There are always short-term fluctuations such as a significantly cooler April.
