Berlin (dpa) - The federal government wants to raise its economic forecast for the current year.

As the German press agency learned on Monday from government circles, growth of 3.5 percent is now expected.

So far, the federal government had expected the gross domestic product to increase by 3.0 percent in 2021.

In the past year, economic output collapsed as a result of the Corona crisis.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) will present the federal government's spring projection this Tuesday.

The federal government has so far been more pessimistic than research institutes, for example, which in a joint forecast in mid-April forecast growth of 3.7 percent.

Altmaier had told the newspapers of the Funke media group: "Despite the ongoing lockdown situation, the economy is developing stronger than many expected."

In January the federal government forecast growth of 3 percent.

"According to the current figures, it looks even better."

The picture in the German economy is currently twofold: While sectors such as the catering industry continue to be burdened by closings, the situation in industry is comparatively good.

This is also due to the fact that demand is increasing in important export markets such as China.
