Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The dispute over a work by the US artist Joel Shapiro in the Cologne Sculpture Park has been brought before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

According to a preliminary assessment by the court, there are now signs of defeat for the Kunststiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which sponsored the purchase of the sculpture at the end of the 1990s with 150,000 D-Marks (Ref .: I-7 U 31/20).

In return, the art foundation received a co-ownership share of a good 14 percent in the sculpture.

When the board of trustees of the sculpture park wanted to remove the work of art from the park because it no longer fit into the artistic concept, a dispute broke out.

Therefore, the majority owner of the sculpture, a private foundation of art patrons, demands the abolition of the community of owners.

The Kunststiftung NRW defends itself against this.

She wants the work of art to continue to be exhibited in NRW.

A verdict in the art dispute is expected on May 28, 2021.

If there is no agreement between the parties and the court sticks to its preliminary assessment, the sculpture may then be auctioned.
