Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - After the decision to phase out electricity from lignite by 2038, the NRW state government and representatives of the region want to conclude a future contract on future development today.

At the digital event "Revier 2030" it should be affirmed that both partners want to cope with the structural change together and agree on specific goals and measures for this.

The contract is signed by Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU), Minister for Economic Affairs Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) and two representatives of the Rheinisches Revier future agency.

The structural change in the lignite area is to officially start with the ceremony and a subsequent specialist conference.

Almost 15 billion euros are available for the renovation in the Rheinische Revier.

Lignite mining should gradually cease by 2038 at the latest.

Some of the 9,000 jobs directly affected will be lost in the coming years.

The structural funds for the conversion are intended to initiate a self-sustaining private sector development.
