Lechtingen (dpa / lni) - A lovingly cared for old Kübelwagen went up in flames near Osnabrück on Monday.
The roughly 50-year-old VW caught fire on federal highway 86 near Lechtingen for an as yet unexplained cause.
This was announced by a spokesman for the Osnabrück district.
The driver was uninjured and was still able to retrieve his papers.
The fire brigade put out the fire, but it was not possible to save the red little SUV.
Volkswagen built such Kübelwagen based on the VW Beetle from 1968 to 1980 for the German armed forces.
The vehicle was also sold to other authorities and private individuals.
