Dessau-Roßlau / Halle (dpa / sa) - The new director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Barbara Steiner, relies on a stronger connection between internationality and regionality.

“That sometimes seems incompatible.

I would now like to make it a little more compatible, ”she said in an interview with the“ Mitteldeutsche Zeitung ”published in Halle on Monday.

That won't always work out.

But the Bauhaus must also be attractive to Dessau.

The art historian from Austria will take up the position on September 1, 2021 in Dessau-Roßlau.

She follows the architect Claudia Perren, who went to Switzerland at her own request.

The foundation has developed very interestingly over the past 10 or 15 years, said Steiner.

"Internationally, it is well positioned in terms of research and teaching," she said.

Everything was set up objectively and structurally.

The newly built museum was added, at the right place in terms of urban planning.

When asked what attracts her to the Bauhaus, Steiner said: “It's a myth.

It's a brand.

It is a world heritage site.

And it is incredibly filled with expectations. "

At the same time, there is enormous tension about a present that does not always want to go together with the myth and the brand.

"I am interested in these tensions," she said.

The Bauhaus and avant-garde art as a whole had already been a teenage love for her.

Steiner sees Dessau as a city of GDR modernism.

"I like that. I have more of a problem with picturesque nooks and crannies," she said.

Steiner, born in 1964, headed the Foundation Gallery for Contemporary Art in Leipzig until 2011, and also taught at universities.

In Austria she has been head of the Kunsthaus Graz so far.
