Mainz / Dijon (dpa / lrs) - In future, prospective teachers can decide whether they want to work in Germany or France after completing an international training course.

The two partner regions of Rhineland-Palatinate and Burgundy-Franche-Comté agreed on Monday that the teaching qualification would also be recognized in the other country.

In teacher training, students from Dijon and Mainz have been able to complete part of their studies at the respective partner university since 2000.

Until now, after such a binational training, they had to decide whether they wanted to teach in Germany or France.

With the agreement that has now been reached, the way into the school systems of both countries is open to them.

The education minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Stefanie Hubig (SPD), said that teacher training was traditionally heavily regulated by the national state.

Therefore, the now in-depth binational training for teaching at secondary schools is "a milestone in Franco-German friendship".

The President of the Université de Bourgogne, Vincent Thomas, said that teachers in schools have a special social responsibility to sensitize young people to an attitude of openness.

The binational training broadens the view and enables a deepening of intercultural skills, which is particularly important for work in schools, said the prospective graduate Patrizia Becker.

Since she is playing with the idea of emigrating to France, the prospect of being able to work in both countries after completing her studies is important to her.

The joint teacher training is embedded in the project of the Franco-German University with a total of 186 courses.

Every year around 1500 students acquire a double degree in one of these courses.
