Augsburg (dpa) - According to a media report, FC Augsburg has separated from coach Heiko Herrlich.

As the “Augsburger Allgemeine” reports, the Bundesliga club, threatened with relegation, reacted to the most recent 3-2 defeat against direct rivals 1. FC Köln.

In addition to Herrlich (49), assistant coach Iraklis Metaxas must also leave.

According to the newspaper, Markus Weinzierl (46) will be his successor.

There was initially no comment from the association itself.

The Bavarian Swabians have three game days before the end of the season, only four points ahead of the relegation place, which the Cologne occupy.

The FCA leadership sees remaining in the Bundesliga at risk.

Against Cologne, the team showed a “terrifying” performance in the first half, as manager Stefan Reuter said afterwards.

After the game, he refused a commitment to Herrlich, which he had always supported before.

You have to "let the experience sink in and process it," said ex-national player Reuter.

"Then we think about what the right steps are for the last three games," added Reuter.

The last three opponents from Augsburg are VfB Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and on the last matchday Bayern Munich.

Herrlich succeeded Martin Schmidt in Augsburg in March 2020.

The 49-year-old managed to keep the team in the elite league last season.

His contract would have expired on June 30, 2022.

The Augsburgers are threatened with their first relegation after a decade in the Bundesliga.
